Fire alarm inspection and testing is the recurring service obligation that keeps a system legally operable rather than merely installed. NFPA 72 does not treat a fire alarm system as something that, once commissioned, continues working indefinitely. Devices drift out of calibration, batteries degrade, wiring connections loosen, and dust accumulates inside smoke detectors, all of which erode reliability in ways that are invisible without active testing.
The distinction between inspection and testing matters. Inspection is a visual and physical check: is the device present, is it damaged, is it obstructed. Testing requires the device to actually activate, a smoke detector needs to detect smoke or an equivalent test aerosol and signal the panel, a pull station needs to be operated and confirmed to transmit an alarm. NFPA 72 requires both, on a schedule that varies by device type, and a program that only performs the visual inspection is not compliant regardless of how thorough that inspection is.
We perform this service for commercial and multi-family properties throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Monroe Counties, testing initiating devices, notification appliances, control panel functions, and system supervision, and documenting results in the format AHJ inspectors and insurance carriers expect.
