A car wash tunnel is not an obvious fire hazard, which is part of why it is worth assessing properly. Nothing in it is burning by design and there is water everywhere. The hazards are instead a combination of ordinary industrial exposures that happen to coexist in a difficult environment: substantial electrical load in a permanently wet space, a meaningful quantity of combustible plastic in the tunnel components themselves, and a chemical store holding acids, caustics, and solvents.

The electrical side is the most consistent problem. Why a Permanently Wet Space Is Hard on Electrical Equipment

The conditions that make a car wash work are the conditions that degrade its electrical installation fastest.

Moisture and chemistry attack terminations continuously. Water is present constantly, and it carries detergent, acid, and caustic mist through the tunnel atmosphere. Terminations corrode, insulation degrades, and enclosure seals fail. Increased resistance at a corroded connection generates heat under load, which is the opening move in the same sequence that produces arcing faults in any electrical installation, running considerably faster here.

Equipment ratings frequently do not match the real environment. Wet location rating addresses water. It does not necessarily address continuous exposure to acidic and caustic mist, which is a different and more aggressive condition. Equipment selected as adequate for a wet location can still degrade rapidly in a car wash tunnel, and replacements installed over the years are often specified to a lower standard than the originals.

The fuel is directly above the ignition source. This is what elevates an ordinary electrical maintenance problem into a fire protection concern.
