A paint spray booth concentrates three fire ingredients into one enclosure: atomized flammable solvent suspended in air, high-volume airflow to feed it oxygen, and electrical and mechanical equipment capable of producing an ignition source. Atomized coating in the spray zone behaves less like a liquid pool fire and more like a flammable vapor cloud, which is why NFPA 33 treats the booth as a distinct hazard rather than an ordinary room.
The complication specific to booths is residue. Every hour of spray time deposits overspray on the booth walls, the exhaust plenum, the filter bank, and, critically, on the suppression nozzles and detectors themselves. That residue is fuel. It is also the reason a booth suppression system fails: a nozzle glazed over with cured coating will not discharge its designed pattern, and a fusible link buried in overspray will not reach its actuation temperature on schedule.
